Conclusions of thermal treatment:

  • High capacity (40-80t/h) allows reasonable time schedules in bigger projects
  • Post treatment monitoring is minimal
  • Versatility of the method allows high variation of the contamination level and compounds in the input material
  • The method is quite insentive of the moisture and soil type of the input material
  • The space requirement is low (40m*60m)
  • Comparison of the total costs to other treatment methods, make thermal treatment very attractive alternative
  • Emission control and mass balance are easy to make

Kemijärvi pulp mill 2010

Kemijärvi pulp mill

Stora Enso Oyj, Kemijärvi pulp mill 2010

In 2010 Savaterra Greenfix at old pulp mill, polluted soil and water treatment.

Soil and groundwater in the elevated concentrations were observed, particularly regarding to oils and VOCs.

In order to save on transport costs and natural materials, thermal station was transferred to the factory site and all objects were restored during one summer. Savaterra Oy was responsible for excavation work, thermal treatment of contaminated soil and ground water collection and treatment system implementation.

Polluted soil was purified in total 50 600 t and the work took about 4 months. After thermal treatment concentrations were below the regulation (Government Decree 214/2007) lower specifications.

The advantages of the method chosen from the subscriber’s point of view were remediation in a short time and sure cleaning results.

Old pulp mill

  • Pollutants: Oil hydrocarbons and VOC
  • Levels of pollutants on average: Oil 500–30000 mg/kg, VOC 500–30000 mg/kg
  • Total amount of thermally treated soil: 50600 t
  • Duration of the project: August 2003 – August 2006. During the winter time       the plant was closed (4 months of the year).
  • Target after treatment: Oil 50 mg/kg, VOC 50 mg/kg

Chambly, France 2011–2012

State railway company SNCF, Chambly, France

In 2012 Savaterra Oy completed its biggest polluted soil remediation project overseas in France. Thermal station was transferred to Chambly, suburban area of Paris, by ship and road freight.

On the project target had located old creosote plant and sleeper impregnation, from the effect of which soil had high concentrations of PAHs and oil hydrocarbons.

Totally was purified 59 300 t polluted soil and PAH concentrations must have been less than the limit value of 50 mg/kg, when the initial concentrations ranged between 1000-2000 mg/kg.

The work was carried out as a consortium with a local company specializing in earth and environmental construction.

Old creosote impregnation site

  • Pollutants: Oil hydrocarbons and PAH
  • Levels of pollutants on average: PAH 30000 mg/kg, Oil 20000 mg/kg
  • Total amount of thermally treated soil 60 000 t
  • Target after treatment: PAH 50mg/kg, Oil 2500mg/kg

Guangzhou, China 2016

Guangzhou, China 2016

In 2016 Savaterra Oy completed remediation of old steel factory subsoils by using thermal desorption method. The equipment was transferred by sea freight to China in spring 2016. The area was located in the center of Guangzhou city. In accordance with the project progress the area was converted to housing area with brand new block of flats. New buildings and residents were in the distance of around 400m from the remediation plant in operation. Since the former steel factory land area became into residential use, cleaning treatment levels were very strict. Pollutants were mainly PAHs (EPA 16). Initial concentration was in average PAH EPA 57-2027mg/kg. Achieved final concentrations after remediation process were PAH compounds 0.63-5mg/kg (compound-specific values). Soil material was very fine (silt).

The work was carried out Savaterra as subcontractor with a local company specializing in earth and environmental construction.
